On September 15, 1982, the Vetch Field in South Wales was the setting for a European goalscoring record that still stands untouched today. Managed by former Liverpool legend John Toshack, Welsh Cup winners Swansea City dismantled Maltese opponents Sliema Wanderers 12-0 in the European Cup Winners' Cup first round first leg.
Swansea launched an immediate blitz against their semi-professional opponents. Striker Ian Walsh and veteran forward Bob Latchford each scored sensational hat-tricks, while Yugoslav defender Ante Rajkoviฤ, Jeremy Charles, and Max Thompson added further goals in a relentless attacking exhibition that saw Swansea lead 6-0 at the half-time interval.
The second half brought no respite for Sliema, as Swansea maintained high intensity in front of 5,130 supporters to add six more goals. The 12-0 victory margin remains the biggest single-match win ever recorded by a British football club in official UEFA competition history.
Toshack's side completed a 17-0 aggregate triumph in Malta two weeks later, immortalizing the Vetch Field rout in European football record books.
