On September 16, 1992, Elland Road witnessed one of the most chaotic and thrilling European Cup nights in English history as English champions Leeds United took on German Bundesliga champions VfB Stuttgart in the first round of the newly formatted UEFA Champions League.
Trailing 3-0 from the first leg in Germany, Howard Wilkinson's Leeds attacked with reckless abandon. Midfielder Gary McAllister opened the scoring with a 17th-minute penalty before Andreas Thom equalized for Stuttgart. Striker Lee Chapman restored Leeds' lead in the 34th minute, and French icon รric Cantona struck a sublime volley in the 66th minute to send Elland Road into delirium.
Chapman scored his second in the 78th minute to make it 4-1 on the night, leaving Leeds just one goal away from an impossible aggregate turnaround. Although Stuttgart scored late through Maurizio Gaudino to make it 4-3 on the night (4-4 aggregate with Stuttgart progressing on away goals), dramatic off-pitch events unfolded hours after the final whistle.
Stuttgart coach Christoph Daum had inadvertently substituted on an ineligible fourth foreign player (Jovica Simaniฤ) in the 83rd minute, violating UEFA regulations. UEFA subsequently awarded Leeds a 3-0 forfeit victory for the second leg and ordered a one-off playoff match at Barcelona's Camp Nou, where Leeds prevailed 2-1 to advance.
